The upgrade of the intersection was part of a $119 million package to cater for the future traffic needs in the region. The multi-use area has commercial, retail, residential and recreational facilities. The Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct comprising Griffith University, Gold Coast University Hospital and Gold Coast Private Hospital also resides in the area and is serviced by a train station and light rail terminus.
